State Calendar

February 7-9, 2018: Show off your honey and other products of your hives at the NJBA 2018 Annual Honey Show! Judging will be on February 8 & 9, 2018 at the Rutgers EcoComplex in Bordentown. You need to get your entries to a drop-off volunteer no later than Monday, February 5th. Entries will be delivered to Trenton by noon on Wednesday, February 7. If you’d like to volunteer to be a drop-off point for entries, transport entries, volunteer at the judging or running the “Best Tasting Honey in NJ” contest in the State House contact Cynthia Werts, cynthiawerts@aol.com. February 17-18, 2018
: Saturday and Sunday at the Windsor Ballroom and National Conference Center, 399 Monmouth Street, East Windsor, NJ 08520. Speakers will include Larry Weaner of Larry Weaner Landscape Associations; EAS Master Beekeeper Frank Licata; our own EAS Master Beekeeper, Northeast branch member John Gaut; NJ State Apiarist Tim Schuler; EAS Master Beekeeper Allen Hayes; Dr. David Gilley and students from William Paterson University We’ll also have our annual auction of honey show winners.  We have reserved a block of rooms at the Holiday Inn. The rooms are $79 plus tax and the block is being held until January 18, after which the rate is the same but availability is not guaranteed. *Rescheduled* April 20, 2018: 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Hunterdon Central High School - Cafeteria 173, 87 NJ Route 31, Flemington. Lorette Cheswick will guide members in getting to know beekeeping at a microscopic level. Learn about hygienic behavior and reading the refuse on a bottom board. Lorette will lead some sessions and have microscopes available for use. Bring anything you'd like to look at under the microscope. There will be a Q&A session. April 28, 2018: Bee Package Installation, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., 135 West Woodschurch Road, Flemington 08822 (Hives are across from Deer Path Park Soccer Fields). A demonstration showing you how to install a package of bees into a Langstroth hive will be done. Unless otherwise noted, RVBA meets on the third Thursday of every month from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Raritan Valley Community College (College Center wing, lower level, 118 Lamington Road, Branchburg 08876. Refreshments, socialization and beekeeping Q&A are part of every meeting.

March 15, 2018: Joe Treimel, President of the Essex County Branch of the NJBA, will speak about making splits and nucs. He's very experienced and this is a good lecture for those of you who are hoping to increase your number of hives this year. Bring a snack to share along with fellowship and bee talk during our informal break. The meeting will be in the classroom next to the atrium.

April 19, 2018: Swarm Prevention is the topic of our program - yes, it is that time of year again!
Dick Madden will have pollinator plant seeds for sale at a very, very reasonable price. Get a few selections for your yard. They also make nice little gifts.
We will have a Tricky Tray - bring Cuttings, Plants, Bee themed gifts, or any other fun item you would like to donate.
You may also bring a snack to share, if you like. We will bring the Coffee and Tea.
